When it comes to Pedalling for Pubs, there is an integral part of the campaign that comes in the form of powerhouse, Katy Moses of KAM Media. Few know this, but it was her idea one sunny afternoon in a London Pubs to approach a group of people from within the industry and ask them to not only ride 335km in blistering heat across Jordan, but to ask them collectively to raise £140,000 whilst doing it.
With 21 riders of 24 now secured ahead of the big ride in June 2020, it only seemed right that Katy kick off our ‘Meet the cyclist’ feature.
Hi Katy, tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi, I’m Katy and I’m married to Stevie, a musician, I was originally bought up in Surrey but moved to London around 10 years ago and I have two step sons, aged 19 and 16. So that’s fun.
What’s your background in the industry?
I started work in the hospitality industry at a very young age, cleaning glasses from about 12 years old, progressing up to bar work and waitressing whilst at uni. I’ve been working in the research side of hospitality for 12 years, and started up KAM in 2014 after spotting a gap in the industry for creative, content-driven insight that is actionable and affordable.
How will you prepare for #PFP2020?
I cycled 550 KM through Vietnam for charity in February this year, which was quite some challenge, so the general aim is to follow what I did for that- extra spin sessions, some long rides out on my bike- it’s imperative that you get some ‘saddle time’ so that you get used to actually cycling rather than just spin classes! A few more earlier nights and a few less G&T’s might also be in order.
Tell us something unusual about yourself?
I’ve kissed Slash from Guns N Roses and that’s all I’ll say about that.
Why are you getting behind the bar?
Pedalling for Pubs was an idea that came to me after I completed the Vietnam ride with a group of people from the grocery industry, I wanted to be a part of creating a cohesive event that supported two very worthy charities and bought people from the hospitality industry together to do so.
The Licensed Trade Charity do so much great work, as do Only A Pavement Away. The latter is especially close to my heart as my Mother, who died a couple of years ago, used to teach in a prison, so the idea of getting people similar to those she taught into gainful employment really appeals.
